Stephen Martin  was educated in Redcar and graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. A successful young flautist, he later did a music performance degree and held a chair of music.  He is listed in Marquis Who’s Who in the World and Debrett’s People of Today.

Researched and published on musical portraits in the enlightenment, portraits of musical Regency women, Dr Ferdinand Dejean in Asia and the commissioning of the Mozart flute works, early enlightenment in Northeast England, concert going behaviour in the Victorian Northeast. Lectured on history of music, music and the brain. Taught flute & ensembles. Supervised music therapy PhD’s.

Study CV – lessons in the North East of England from 1976 with the jazz player Ray Dales, the flute-teaching author Derek Henderson, Edwin Raymond (former Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra flautist, later Cleveland County Music Adviser) and the American Leigh Hannah, as well as learning occasionally with David Haslam, conductor/flautist of the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra, Fritz Spiegl of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the baroque expert Mary Tyers.

Masterclasses with James Galway’s teacher Geoffrey Gilbert, Trevor Wye, David Nicholson, Stephen Preston (baroque flute) and recently with the soloist Wissam Boustany.

As a teenager, performed Mozart’s D Major Flute Concerto, age 13. Principal Flute Cleveland Youth Orchestra inc. winning The National Festival, (Stravinsky Rite of Spring, Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique, Tchaikovsky Symphony 5, Franck Symphony D Minor, Aaron Copland Rodeo), semi-professional Principal Flautist in Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra (Sibelius Symphony 2, Verdi Requiem, Carmina Burana, Brahms Requiem), Principal Flautist under Prof George Hajinikos (Brahms Symphonies series) and semi-professional Principal Flautist/Piccolo in Middlesbrough Little Theatre Orchestra.

Baroque (Vivaldi) & French impressionist (Fauré, Debussy) recital performance in King’s Hall, 1985, with the pianist Professor Denis Matthews, famous for accompanying the horn player Dennis Brain. Performed solo Telemann Flute Concerto in D, with University Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Professor Eric Cross, Gulbenkian Theater, 1984.

Musical Broadcasts

1981 Haydn’s Creation obligatti on solo baroque flute live on BBC Radio 3 from Stockton Parish Church, with Sarah Walker CBE and Sir Thomas Allen.

1982 Directed/played a Rossini Wind Quartet on ITV.

1982 Accompanied Dame Janet Baker on BBC Radio 3 in Elgar’s Sea Pictures as Principal flautist in the national festival award-winning Cleveland Youth Orchestra.

History Research Award

George Henderson Scholarship for history research, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 1982. This was on architecture and music in 18th century Newcastle.
